Jeton (Obverse), of Mary, Queen of Scots

A jeton was a counter or token used to represent money. This is the obverse of a silver jeton of Mary Queen of Scots, dating from 1560.

The obverse bears a crowned shield of arms. The Latin inscription translates as 'Mary and Francis, by the grace of God, King and Queen of the Scots Etc'.

Mary had not renounced her claim to the English crown and the 'etc' in the inscription is thought to refer to England. However, by avoiding explicitly mentioning England, this could officially be denied.
