Sand glassThis 17th century sand glass is from the Chapel Royal at Linlithgow in West Lothian. The glass is contained within an oak frame. The joint in the middle of the sand glass is covered in leather and bound with twine. The duration of the falling sand is approximately 40 minutes. The stand containing the sand glass would have been attached to a pulpit, allowing the minister to time his sermon. Many sermons lasted three hours or more.
