Add to album

This 'Specie book', dated 1700, was produced for use in conjunction with the 'Rotula Arithmetica', a device for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, invented by a dissenting minister, George Brown (1650-1730).

The book contains currency tables. Many of the coins were not Scots-minted silver, but foreign currency, legal tender in Scotland at values fixed by the Privy Council and Parliament.

George Brown also produced mathematical publications popularising the decimal notation.
