Map, of province of KyleThis map of the province of Kyle was adapted by Robert Gordon of Straloch (1580-1661) from an original map by Timothy Pont (1560?-1630?). It appeared in Volume V of Johann Blaeu's 'Novus Atlas', the first printed atlas of Scotland. The map's scale is 0.8 of an inch to 1 mile. It shows 'COILA PROVINCIA. THE PROVINCE OF KYLE' with adjoining parts of 'Cuningham', 'Elyds-dail', 'Nithis-Dail' and 'Galloway'. Timothy Pont was an accomplished mathematician and the first projector of a Scottish atlas. In the late 16th century, he carried out on foot a remarkable survey of Scotland which took him nearly 20 years. He died just before he completed the survey.
