Miner's sledge hammer (detail)This detail shows the metal head of a miner's sledge hammer which would have been used for driving wedges into the ground. The head is made with a convex striking face and is of a style known as a 'plug'. The head is stamped 'A Drummond, West Calder'. Coal mining grew steadily throughout the 18th century as industries demanded cheaper fuel. Simple tools and equipment were used by colliers for centuries.
