Add to albumThis model shows a machine for calendering cloth - glazing or smoothing cloth by passing it between rollers. It dates from the late 19th century and was made in a workshop of the Museum from drawings supplied by Messrs. Duncan, Stewart & Co. of Glasgow. The machine itself also dates from the late 19th century.
The model has three paper and three cast iron cylinders, an overhead beam and a driving pulley. It is built to a scale of two inches to a foot.
Woollen fabrics owe their variety to the different types of finishing processes. Most fabrics were milled, calendered or fulled to produce a degree of felting which made the woven texture less easy to see.
