Front of a cross slab
Add to album

This is the front of a cross slab found at the old castle of Woodwray in Angus. It was carved between 800 and 900.

The front has a cross which has been defaced badly, perhaps in the 17th century. It is surrounded by fantastic beasts, including a pair of interlaced snakes and a creature swallowing a man whose legs protrude from its mouth (probably Jonah and the whale).

The slab was presented to Sir Walter Scott and erected on his estate at Abbotsford. It was moved from Abbotsford to the Museum in 1923.
