Plate

This fragment of a steatite baking plate was found at Jarlshof in Shetland. It was used sometime between 1100 and 1300.

The fragment is from a roughly circular or oval baking plate. Its surfaces were scored by a sharp tool to ensure efficient heat distribution.

Baking plates were used by Norse communities as a way of baking long-lasting 'crispbread'/oatcake type items. Plates such as this one were placed over the embers of a fire and the dough to be baked would be placed on them.
