From Jarlshof, Shetland
This tiny bowl was found at Jarlshof in Shetland. It dates from between 800 and 1000 and is made of steatite - a soft, easily worked stone which distributes heat well. It was probably used as a toy.
The miniature hemispherical cooking bowl has a flattish base and a shoulder below the rim.
Viking communities made toys for children in the form of miniature everyday items such as this cooking bowl. It is possible that this was a personal possession brought across from Norway.
