Ceramic pot found in a cist

This ceramic pot was found in a cist under a cairn on Kilmartin Glebe at Kilmartin in Argyll. It was placed within the grave, probably containing an offering of food or drink, sometime between 2300 and 1700 BC.

The pot is decorated over its entire exterior surface with small incised lines created with a comb. There are small handles at its maximum diameter.

Most pottery in Scotland before the 1st millennium AD was produced without using sophisticated or complex means. Production was generally small in scale. But high quality handmade pots, such as this one, suggest some limited specialisation occurred.
