From Castlehill, Ayrshire

Fragments of a Roman samian ware dish
Add to album

These fragments from a Roman samian ware dish were found at the defended native settlement at Castlehill in Ayrshire. They were originally imported or brought from Gaul by Roman soldiers in Britain, and later obtained by natives.

The dish is fragmentary, with restored sections, but its general shape is clear.

Although the Roman occupation in Scotland was strictly military, it did result in a number of fine objects being imported. These spread by various means to the population around the camps, where they were used as status symbols in the local society.
