RecordCrucibles< 1 of 1 > Back From Dunadd, Argyll
CruciblesA crucible is a small container in which metals are melted during metalworking. These two examples of baked clay were found at the site of the royal hillfort at Dunadd in Argyll. They were used during the manufacture of bronze objects. One of the crucibles, now broken, is broadly triangular in shape, with the narrow base roughly at right angles to the flat handle. The other crucible is more cylindrical in shape, with a broad flat handle and rounded base. Excavations at Dunadd have revealed much evidence for the manufacture of high status jewellery and trinkets, including crucibles for working bronze, gold and silver. The products were used as royal gifts to allies and loyal followers. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
