Cornu mouthpiece

This bronze mouthpiece is from a cornu - a large Roman curved horn. It was found at Castlecary in Stirlingshire and dates from between 140 and 165 AD.

The tube of the mouthpiece is decorated with ribbing.

Trumpets such as this were used for signalling.
