Fragment of a terracotta chimneyThis fragment of a terracotta chimney was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used sometime between 80 and 180 AD. The fragment is from a circular fitting which had a square or rectangular hole cut in the side. Hot air and smoke dispersed from Roman buildings through chimneys.
