This ceramic jar was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was produced locally for or by the Roman army between 80 and 180 AD.
The jar is a rusticated black ware, made locally for or by the army. It has been restored.
An administrative system existed to ensure that the Roman army was supplied with food and other goods. Quartermasters were responsible for obtaining supplies, and dealt with army craftsmen, various traders, and the native population.
