Bowl

This samian ware bowl was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was imported from Roman Gaul sometime between 80 and 180 AD.

The bowl is decorated with lotus buds.

Some Roman officers brought their own fine tablewares to Scotland or purchased imported pieces. Samian ware, made in Gaul, was particularly valued, sometimes repaired if damaged or reused to manufacture other items.
