FittingThis iron fitting, probably from an item of furniture, was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used sometime between 80 and 180 AD. Iron object, possibly a door handle or knocker, from Newstead Usually all that survives of Roman furniture are the metal rods or fittings. Complete examples from Herculaneum in Italy, together with some pictures and surviving wooden fragments, show that the Romans used chairs, tables, couches, beds and chests.
