RecordHelmet boss< 1 of 1 > Back from Newstead, Roxburghshire
Helmet bossThis bronze boss from a helmet was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It formed part of the equipment of a member of the auxiliary cavalry, worn sometime between 80 and 180 AD. The hemispherical boss is damaged on one side. The helmets of the auxiliary cavalry differed from those of the legionary soldiers. Many consisted of a close-fitting iron cap and a neckguard, sheathed in bronze, sometimes with bronze bosses attached. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
