Belt buckle tongue

This bronze tongue from a belt buckle was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was probably part of a soldier's clothing, worn between 80 and 100 AD.

Excavations at Newstead have revealed much about the layout, daily life and equipment in Roman camps in Scotland. Belts were an essential item of clothing for a soldier, worn by both the elite legionary and the ordinary auxiliary soldiers.
