This bronze clip is one of a number of similar objects found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. Dating from between 80 and 100 AD, it was part of a horse harness,
The loop on the left of the clip held a ring to which several other clips were attached. There are five holes for metal studs.
Leather on harnesses rarely survives, but the metal fittings and ornaments are often preserved. The Roman auxiliary cavalry had both simple and elaborate harnesses.
