Iron buckle

This iron buckle was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used to fasten wide straps or girths on a harness between 140 and 180 AD.

The Romans depended greatly on horses. Materials needed to set up and provision the forts in Scotland were hauled over short and long distances by horses. The cavalry also, of course, needed a large number of horses, and equipment for them.
