HammerThis heavy iron hammer is one of a number of blacksmith's tools found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used between 80 and 100 AD. One end of the hammer has one flattened end roughly octagonal in shape, and an edge on the other end. It was placed on metal and struck with a sledge hammer. Iron was widely used by the Romans for tools, weapons and fittings. Blacksmiths made a wide range of objects, using tools not that different from those in use today.
