Helmet stripThis bronze helmet strip was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It would have reinforced a helmet worn by a member of the auxiliary cavalry sometime between 80 and 180 AD. The strip is curved, tapering to a point through which a small conical finial has been inserted. The helmets of the auxiliary cavalry differed from those of the legionary soldiers. Many consisted of a close-fitting iron cap and a neckguard, sheathed in bronze, sometimes with bronze bosses attached. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
