Tent panel

This leather tent panel was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used between 80 and 180 AD.

The panel is stitched all the way around. It has two patch marks and thong holes.

The Romans mass-produced hides to meet the needs of the army. The demand for hides was vast: a tent for eight men needed about 70 goatskins, and the army in Scotland was some 15,000 strong. There were even factories for tanning leather.
