Purse (Piece)This piece of a leather purse was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used sometime between 80 and 180 AD. The purse has slits for a narrow band, which would have been pulled tight to close the purse. Leather was used for a wide range of objects necessary to a Roman soldier, including tents, saddles, harness, shoes, clothing, belts, purses, bags, and shield covers. Elsewhere in the Roman empire, there is evidence of taxes demanded in hides. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
