From Eskgrove, Inveresk, Midlothian
This sherd of samian ware pottery was found at Eskgrove at Inveresk in Midlothian. It dates from between 140 and 165 AD.
The sherd has been crudely etched with the inscription 'Victor', probably the name of the owner.
Many Roman soldiers could read and write to some extent, and marked their names on their belongings.
