This glass bead was found on Skye. It is a Roman object, which has been passed from one native chief to another, ending up miles beyond the frontier. The bead dates between 80 and 200 AD.

The blue-glazed bead is a type known as a melon bead, due to its obvious resemblance to the fruit.

Powerful local chieftains controlled contact with the Romans, keeping most of the Roman objects and passing some onto their followers. The Roman objects provided valuable raw materials, and were often reused for other purposes.
