From Norrie's Law, near Largo, Fife

Brooch
Add to album

This silver penannular brooch is one of two found in a large hoard of silver jewellery and hacksilver, buried between 600 and 700 at Norrie's Law near Largo in Fife. It is a Pictish brooch, though with some unusual features.

Brooches of this nature are often ornamented on the expanded terminals and the hoop, but this one is plain. The use of twisted silver for the hoops is unique on Pictish penannular brooches. It is missing the brooch pin.

The Norrie's Law hoard originally contained over 10 kilograms of silver, although most was melted down after its discovery. Some of the objects, like this brooch are Pictish, but much older silver, including fragments of Roman spoons, were also included.
