Ceramic pot, five flint arrowheads and a piece of a flint awl

This ceramic pot, five flint arrowheads and a piece of a flint awl were found at Springwood at Kelso in Roxburghshire. They date from between 2300 and 1800 BC.

The pot is decorated with comb impressions in geometric patterns over much of its exterior surface. Approximately half of the pot has been reconstructed. The arrowheads all have barbs and tangs, incomplete on two of them.

From around 2500 BC, individual burial became popular over much of Scotland. In most cases, the only item to be buried with the dead was a pot containing an offering of food or drink. Some people, however, were given more grave goods.
