Ceramic pot found in a child's grave

This ceramic pot was found in a child's burial at Doune in Perthshire. It was found with a miniature macehead, a symbol of power in adult graves, which suggests that the child was of high status. The burial dates from between 2000 and 1700 BC.

The pot is smaller than similar pots found in adult burials. It has been decorated over most of its exterior surface.

From around 2500 BC, individual burial became popular over much of Scotland. In most cases, the only grave good was a pot containing an offering of food or drink. Some children, as in this case, were given a modified version of an adult burial.
