Small ceramic pot

This small ceramic pot was found on either North or South Ronalday in Orkney. It dates from between 2050 and 1500 BC.

The pot is decorated with incised lines. There are two small holes on the two sides.

Most pottery in Scotland before the 1st millennium AD was produced without using sophisticated or complex means. Production was generally small in scale. But high quality handmade pots, such as this one, suggest perhaps some limited specialisation.
