Gouge of bronze

This bronze gouge was found at Adabrock on Lewis in the Outer Hebrides in a hoard of tools, weapons, vessel fragments and beads. It dates from between 950 and 750 BC.

The gouge has a socket, which would have had a wooden handle fitted into it.

Socketed gouges were specialised woodworking tools, and may have been the property of a specialist carpenter. The rest of the Adabrock hoard contains valuable tools, jewellery and other items, almost certainly deposited as a gift to the gods.
