Add to album

This iron ring is part of a late Bronze Age hoard of jewellery and other items, buried in a pot and ploughed up at Balmashannar in Angus. The ring was probably made in in the Austrian Alps. It is one of the earliest iron objects in Scotland.

Bronze penannular armlet from Balmashanner

The Balmashanner hoard demonstrates how extensive and complex were the contacts between Scotland and the outside world during the early first millennium BC. This ring was probably obtained through links between elites in Scotland and northern Europe.
