From Dunsapie, Arthur's Seat, Edinburgh
Add to albumThis sandstone mould was found at Dunsapie on Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh. It was used to cast a number of objects, sometime between 200 BC and 1000 AD.
The mould was used to cast (at least) a ring, a horseshoe-shaped object, a dumb-bell-shaped object, and part of another ring. It is broken.
Bronze objects could be made by melting bronze in a crucible in a furnace, and then casting it into shapes using moulds. At first, simple moulds were used for making flat objects. Later more complex moulds of clay and stone were developed.
