Officer's jacket of the Royal Glasgow VolunteersThis officer's jacket, dating from 1794, is of the Royal Glasgow Volunteers. Fear of revolution and war with France resulted in Scots organising themselves into volunteer units. The decorative buttons are engraved with a crown and the initials 'RGV'. Like many of the volunteer units, this regiment received very little government support. Officers were elected by the men, who served without pay and had to buy their own uniforms. A Scottish nationwide militia force was eventually created in 1797. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
