Plate, made at Alloa, ClackmannanshireThis plate was made in the late 19th century at W. & J.A. Bailey's pottery at Alloa in Clackmannanshire. It is very similar to plates being produced by Belfield's Pottery in Prestonpans. The relief-moulded plate is decorated with 'majolica' style multicoloured glazes. Alloa was an important coal mining centre, and a pottery (and eventually a glassworks) were established by the 1790s to take advantage of the abundant fuel and locally available clay. The pottery at Alloa finally closed in 1907. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
