This shows one side of a transfer-printed earthenware mug which dates from around 1838. The inscription on the front of the mug reads 'Peter Swinton/1838'.
The pattern is a version of the well-known pattern 'Asiatic Pheasant' which, with the exception of a willow pattern, was the most popular of all blue-printed designs.
Peter Burns Swinton (1827-1912) was born in Gifford in East Lothian. He undertook legal training and became factor of Yester Estate in Gifford.
