This 'feathery' golf ball is stamped 'D. McGrassick' and dates from 1882. A feathery ball consists of a three-part stitched leather skin, densely packed with feathers.

Feathery golf-ball stamped D. McGrassick and marked in ink "30" and "G.H.T. 1882, Vol XVII, p. 75"

The earliest golf balls were wooden and were still widely used even after the introduction of 'feathery' balls. Making a feathery ball was a skilled and time consuming task. This made them expensive but they did not split as easily as wooden balls.
