Presented at Kilwinning, Ayrshire
This silver-mounted coconut cup was made by Robert Fullarton of Bartanholme. It was presented as a prize for target shooting at Kilwinning in Ayrshire in 1746.
The silver rim is engraved 'The prize of butts at Kilwinning made and sett out by Robert Fullarton of Bartanholme. Esqr. For the year 1746'. The coconut has been polished and fixed onto a turned wooden base.
Leisure time and wealth increased in 18th century Scotland, particularly for the middle classes. People were able to enjoy sports more often and there was an increasing belief that exercise was necessary for a healthy life.
