Seal matrix, of Edinburgh and Glasgow Union Canal Company
Add to album

This seal matrix, made from a single piece of agate, is of the Edinburgh and Glasgow Union Canal Company. It dates from 1817.

The text around the edge of the seal reads, 'Edinburgh and Glasgow Union Canal Company, 1817'.

Work on the Union Canal began in 1817 and it opened five years later, making a direct route from Edinburgh to Glasgow. Initially, coal was brought into Edinburgh from central Scotland, but passenger boats were in use by 1835.
