This brass book stamp dates from the early 17th century, during the reign of James VI.
The stamp bears the royal arms of James VI before his accession to the English throne. The Latin inscription reads: 'In Defence, Iacobus Rex 6'. This was in use to around 1603. '
In Defence' is an abbreviated version of 'In my defence, God me defend'.
