Seal matrix, of the Burgh of DumfriesThis is the seal matrix of Burgh of Dumfries. It dates from the 17th century and is made of steel. The matrix depicts St Michael and the Dragon. The Latin inscription translates as: 'Seal of the Burgh Council of Dumfries'. As centres of local government, burghs had their own seals which were used on documents to represent identity, authority and status.
