Seal matrices of the Great Seal of ScotlandThese two silver seal matrices (pictured here with their impression) are the obverse and reverse of the Great Seal of Scotland of George III. The matrices date from between 1760 and 1820. The obverse depicts the king on horseback, the reverse, the royal arms. The 1707 Treat of Union stated that there was to be 'one Great Seal of the United Kingdom'. However, it went on to state that there were to be separate seals in Scotland, as the continuation of the separate Scottish legal system made them necessary.
