Cameo ring with a portrait of Prince Charles Edward Stewart

This gold and enamel cameo ring was made around 1748, possibly in Paris by exiled Edinburgh goldsmith Adam Tait. It contains a gold medallion bearing a bust of Prince Charles Edward Stewart.

The hoop of the ring is inscribed, on white enamel, with the Latin words 'Dum Spirat Spero' ('While he breathes I hope'), and 'CPR' (for Charles, Prince Regent).

The ring was given to the Museum of Scotland in 1783 - five years before Prince Charles died - by Alexander Gairdner, an Edinburgh goldsmith. Most Jacobite jewellery dates from the period when the cause was effectively lost.
