Diploma of the Cape Club of Edinburgh, 18th century

This 'Knight of the Cape' diploma was produced by the Cape Club of Edinburgh. The club was established in 1764, initially to raise support for a Scottish militia. It became a celebrated convivial club and by 1800 had over 600 'Knights of the Cape'.

Member's diploma of the Cape Club of Edinburgh, 1793 - 1843

Clubs of all kinds were a prominent part of the Scottish social scene in the 18th and 19th centuries. Membership varied depending on whether they were set up for political, debating, literary or simply convivial purposes. Many met at favoured taverns.
