Writing case with a quill pen and an ink bottle

This leather writing case with quill pen and ceramic ink bottle dates from the late 18th century.

The case is decorated with a stamped floral design.

As postal services improved in Scotland throughout the 18th century, writing letters became an increasingly important means of communication. The quill remained the common writing implement until the introduction of the metal nib in the 19th century.
