Sand dredge, for absorbing ink

A sand dredge contained powdered sanderach, a form of resin, which was sprinkled onto paper to absorb excess ink. This example is made of ivory.

The lid is pierced with over thirty holes for the sand to fall through.

Writing letters became an increasingly important means of long distance contact as postal services improved. Basic writing materials were pen, ink and paper, but quill cutters, sand dredges, and writing sets were all part of the letter-writer's equipment.
