Curling stoneThis granite curling stone with iron handle is from Melville Castle, near Dalkeith in Midlothian. It dates from around 1830. The curling stone has been dressed by a mason to a regular shape. Curling became the most popular sport in Scotland around 1800 and was played by all classes. It was more common in the country than in the towns because deep frost was likely to put a stop to work. Townsfolk went to the country nearby to curl.
