Cockspurs

In the sport of cock fighting, spurs were sometimes attached to cocks' legs to ensure a more certain end to the fight. These two cockspurs date from around 1800.

Cockspur used in cock fighting

Cock fighting was rarer in Scotland than in England. A disreputable cockpit survived until about 1810 in Leith. Fights, however, were held in schools on Shrove Tuesday, linked with the ancient pagan idea of sacrificing a cock on the first day of spring.
