Curling stoneThis granite curling stone with iron handle is from Borgue Farm in Kirkcudbrightshire. It dates from around 1750. The iron handle makes it possible to deliver the stone with more control. Curling became the most popular sport in Scotland around 1800 and was played by all classes. It was more common in the country than in the towns because deep frost was likely to put a stop to work. Townsfolk went to the country nearby to curl.
